Redirect Your Federal and State Taxes Into Student Scholarships

You already owe these taxes. RedefinED helps you redirect a portion of them — through the Education Freedom Tax Credit and approved state programs — into scholarships for K-12 students who need them most.

This Is Not a Donation — It's a Tax Redirection

A charitable donation reduces your taxable income. What RedefinED helps you do is different—and more powerful. Through federal and state tax credit programs, eligible taxpayers can redirect money they already owe in taxes directly into student scholarship funding. Instead of that money going entirely to the government, it goes to a student.

The result is the same tax outcome for you—but a scholarship for a child who needs it.

  • No additional out-of-pocket cost in most cases
  • Dollar-for-dollar federal tax credit up to $1,700 through the Education Freedom Tax Credit (EFTC)
  • Up to 90% state tax credit through approved state programs
  • Direct impact on students in your community or state
  • Simple process—RedefinED guides you through every step

Your Tax Credit Participation Options

Depending on your state and tax situation, you may be eligible for federal credits, state credits, or both. RedefinED helps you identify the right option and walks you through the process from start to finish.

Option 1 — Education Freedom Tax Credit (EFTC) — Federal Program

The Education Freedom Tax Credit is a federal program that provides a 100% tax credit of up to $1,700 per taxpayer for contributions made to approved Scholarship Granting Organizations. It is available nationwide — regardless of which state you live in — and is designed to be simple and accessible for individual taxpayers.

  • 100% federal tax credit—dollar for dollar against taxes owed
  • Up to $1,700 per individual taxpayer annually
  • Available in all 50 states
  • Supports K-12 scholarships through approved SGOs
  • No annual cap—available year-round

Option 2 — State Tax Credit Programs

Many states operate their own tax credit scholarship programs alongside the federal EFTC, often with higher contribution limits and significant state tax savings. Program names, credit percentages, and annual caps vary by state.

RedefinED currently supports state programs in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Florida, Tennessee, Texas, and Colorado. If your state is not listed, contact us — we can advise on available options in your region.

  • Pennsylvania EITC — up to 90% state tax credit
  • Virginia Education Improvement Scholarship Tax Credits
  • Florida Tax Credit Scholarship Program
  • Additional states — contact us for current availability

Recommended — Maximize Both Programs

Eligible taxpayers may participate in both the federal EFTC and their state's tax credit program simultaneously.

Combining both programs maximizes your tax benefit while increasing scholarship opportunities for students. RedefinED coordinates the entire process for you.

How the Contribution Process Works

RedefinED handles the complexity so you don't have to. Here's what participating looks like from start to finish.

1. Tell Us About Your Tax Situation
You share basic information about your federal and state tax liability and which program or programs you'd like to participate in. This takes less than two minutes and can be done online or with the help of our team.

2. We Match You With the Right Program
Based on your state and tax situation, RedefinED identifies the appropriate Scholarship Granting Organization and program pathway for your contribution. We handle the coordination—you don't need to research or contact an SGO on your own.

3. Your Contribution Is Processed
Your contribution is directed to the approved SGO. For federal EFTC contributions, the process is straightforward and fast. State programs may involve additional steps depending on the program and annual cap availability—our team guides you through each one.

4. You Receive Your Tax Credit Confirmation
Once your contribution is processed, you receive documentation for your tax records. Your CPA or tax preparer uses this to apply your federal and/or state tax credit when you file. The scholarship funding flows from the SGO to eligible students and schools.

Act Early — State Programs Have Annual Caps

Federal EFTC contributions can be made year-round. State tax credit programs, however, operate under annual funding caps set by state legislatures. Once a state’s cap is reached, no further contributions can be accepted for that tax year — and spots are claimed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Donors who wait until late in the year frequently miss out on state credit availability. Securing your participation early ensures you have access to the full range of credits available to you.

  • State caps reset annually but often fill quickly.
  • Pennsylvania EITC allocations have historically been claimed within days of opening.
  • Federal EFTC remains available year-round with no annual cap.
  • Contact us to check current availability in your state.

Where Your Contribution Goes

Every contribution made through RedefinED is directed to an approved Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO)—a nonprofit entity authorized by state or federal program guidelines to receive tax credit contributions and distribute them as scholarships to eligible K–12 students.

You have the ability to designate your contribution toward a specific school or leave it to the SGO to award scholarships based on student eligibility and need. Either way, 100% of the scholarship funds go directly to students and schools—not to RedefinED.

  • Contributions go to approved, regulated Scholarship Granting Organizations.
  • You may designate a specific school if desired.
  • SGOs verify student eligibility and distribute scholarship awards.
  • RedefinED does not receive any portion of your contribution.

Frequently Asked Questions for Donors

Yes. Federal and state tax credit scholarship programs are authorized by law — the federal Education Freedom Tax Credit (EFTC) through federal tax code, and state programs through individual state legislation. These programs have been in operation for years across multiple states and have been upheld by courts. Contributions are made to approved, regulated Scholarship Granting Organizations that comply with all state and federal program requirements.

A charitable donation provides a tax deduction — it reduces your taxable income, which indirectly lowers what you owe. A tax credit contribution provides a dollar-for-dollar offset against tax you already owe. If you owe $1,700 in federal taxes and contribute $1,700 through the EFTC, your federal tax bill is reduced by the full $1,700. This makes tax credit participation significantly more valuable than an equivalent charitable donation for most taxpayers.

The Education Freedom Tax Credit is a federal tax credit program that allows eligible individual taxpayers to redirect up to $1,700 of their federal tax liability into contributions to approved Scholarship Granting Organizations. The EFTC is available nationwide, regardless of state, and provides a 100% dollar-for-dollar federal tax credit. Contributions support K-12 student scholarships distributed through approved SGOs.

Eligibility varies by program. The federal EFTC is currently structured for individual taxpayers. Many state programs, however, specifically include businesses — particularly pass-through entities such as LLCs, S corporations, and partnerships — with higher contribution limits than those available to individuals. RedefinED can help you identify which programs are available based on your specific tax structure.

For the federal EFTC, the current limit is $1,700 per individual taxpayer per year. State program limits vary significantly — some states set limits per taxpayer, others per business entity, and some allow contributions well into the tens of thousands of dollars for qualifying business participants. Contact us to review the specific limits applicable to your state and tax situation.

Contributions are directed to approved Scholarship Granting Organizations that are regulated by state or federal program guidelines and required to distribute funds as scholarships to eligible students. You can designate your contribution toward a specific school. The SGO provides documentation of your contribution, and scholarship awards are tracked and reported in compliance with program requirements. RedefinED does not receive any portion of your contribution.

If your state’s annual cap has been reached, state credit contributions for that tax year are closed. You can still participate in the federal EFTC, which has no annual cap, and we can add you to early notification for the following year’s state program opening. Many state programs open on a specific date each year — having RedefinED monitor availability on your behalf ensures you don’t miss the window.

No. You can work with any licensed CPA or tax preparer you choose. RedefinED provides the documentation and credit confirmation you need to share with your tax professional. We strongly recommend consulting your CPA before participating to understand how the credit applies to your specific tax situation and to confirm your eligibility.
